North and Central Manchester Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) were two of 66 PCTs across the country to receive funding from the Big Lottery Fund to carry out 5 A DAY Local Community projects. This was a 2 year project that has now finished. The management of the project was based within Manchester Public Health Development Service. |
|
| The aim of ‘Eat 5 A DAY the Manchester way’ was to promote the uptake of fruit and vegetables with Manchester residents. We did this through working in partnership with a number of organisations across the city to deliver community projects. We also undertook a highly visual communication strategy.
In the North of the city, most of our work was focused on children and young people. Specific projects were undertaken with pregnant women, children under 5 and their families and primary and secondary schools.
In Central Manchester, the target groups were single men in supported housing and older people.
Altogether we reached approximately 5,144 people and our evaluations show that we had a positive impact on many participants’ lives in terms of improving diets, skills and knowledge. We also helped some people change their attitudes to fruit and vegetables and assisted others to develop socially and emotionally. |
- Point 1. Eating at least 5 portions of fruit and veg could lead to an estimated reduction of 20% in the overall deaths from chronic disease.
- Point 2. Each increase of 1 portion of fruit and veg a day can lower the risk of heart disease by 4% and stoke by 6%
