Healthy Communities Collaborative -
Improving communities, changing lives

The Healthy Communities Collaborative (HCC) encourages health change in communities, in Manchester we have a Cancer Collaborative.

What do we do?
The main aim of the Cancer Collaborative is to encourage people with bowel breast and lung cancer symptoms to present to their GP sooner, to ensure earlier detection and treatment. The earlier these cancers are caught the better the chances of survival.

Who is involved?
The HCC teams are a mix of local people and workers supported by health care professionals. The local knowledge and support provided by local people is vital to making the project work.

How do we do it?
We work with many different health care professionals and voluntary organisations to raise awareness about the early signs and symptoms of breast, bowel and lung cancer. We also inform of cancer screening programmes that are available.

Where will it all happen?
Directly in the local communities of Cheetham Hill, Harpurhey, and Charlestown. For example: holding awareness raising events at various venues such as, community centres, places of worship doctor’s surgeries and many more.

Do you want to join in?
If you feel you would like to join in and offer the teams anything or have suggestions about groups that would like to have an awareness raising event then please contact:
Clare Clarke 0161 861 2907

Blackpool Workshop:
So that the teams can learn more about the HCC, cancer symptoms and how to raise awareness in the community there is a 2 day workshop in Blackpool 20th - 22nd November.

The workshop has a wide range of talks about bowel, breast and lung cancer, how to raise awareness of symptoms and screening. There are also talks about how Healthy Communities Collaborative works in action and how to work effectively with a community centred approach. Those attending will be able to put this knowledge into practice back in their local communities with support from relevant health professionals. There is another learning workshop in February so anyone interested can contact Clare Clarke 0161 861 2907.

Be Loud!
By BEING LOUD about bowel cancer and its symptoms, overcoming the embarrassment so often connected with the disease, you can help to save lives from the second most deadly cancer in the UK.

Beating bowel cancer’s 2008 campaign will take place from 28th January to 3rd February. The BE LOUD! campaign provides fantastic and fun-filled opportunities to get involved and get talking about bowel cancer - and at all times, remembering to BE LOUD and proud! Wear your most colourful, craziest, zaniest attire, talk out loud (or sing, or shout!) about bowel cancer, and make sure everyone knows why!
