Women’s Day Event 7th March 2007, Women’s Substance Misuse Forum

The day was aimed at women who use substances or who are affected by substance use. There was information and advice from a variety of agencies on a range of topics including drugs and alcohol, mental health, sexual health and pregnancy, volunteering, and education and training. The day provided an opportunity for women to find out what was going on in substance misuse services in Manchester and to have their say about how services might be shaped in the future.

January 2007 Unit awareness reaches Manchester Metrolink
Manchester Drug and Alcohol Strategy funded a two week campaign spreading the “one drink isn’t always one unit” message across trams coming in and out of Manchester city centre. The Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for England (2004) recommends we make the “sensible drinking” message easier to understand and apply. Tram Advert Image
November 2006 Best Bar None Winners
Eighty venues met the minimum standard of safety to receive accreditation, meaning that they can now use the official Manchester 'Best Bar None' logo on their own promotional advertising to let customers know that the venue is working hard to keep them safer. The awards were held at the Hilton Hotel on Sunday 26 November 2006 along with representatives from the police, NHS Drinking Responsibly project, Manchester City Council, licensees, the drinks industry and the event sponsors, Budweiser. The event was hosted by television presenter Paul Crone and entertainment was provided on the night by cast from Manchester’s newest venue The Birdcage and by Salford band Big Deal.

Responsible alcohol retailing


Manchester has been the first to offer a new national responsible retailing course to staff in bars, clubs and off-licences. The BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing is aimed at anyone working in alcohol retail and provides knowledge and confidence to promote the 4 licensing objectives.

Alcohol awareness in prison


Alcohol awareness sessions have been set up by the Healthy Prisons Coordinator in collaboration with the alcohol team at MPHDS. The aims of these sessions have been to raise awareness of the consequences of alcohol misuse and to explore safer drinking methods.

Parenting Project


The MPHDS delivered alcohol awareness training across the North West Region, as part of a national Parenting Project with Alcohol Concern to raise awareness of alcohol issues for workers who work with parents. www.alcoholconcern.org.uk

We have worked with the City’s Childminder Network, to train childminders in alcohol issues. This has improved provision for children whose parents want to attend treatment and support for alcohol problems.  A similar training course was delivered to family workers in Manchester.
